USD Discovery District hits development 'tipping point'

The USD Discovery District is moving from plans to reality.

The 80-acre research park in northwest Sioux Falls has been discussed for decades, but the project is now transitioning from the fundraising stage to the development stage.

Road construction starts next month, and in the past few weeks, the district's planners have sent out requests for proposals for a hotel and for a development partner for a 25,000 square-foot research facility.

We've hit a tipping point and are actually moving, I think more rapidly than probably we thought we would be," said Rich Naser, president of the research park.

The Discovery District aims to not only foster workforce and economic development for the area, but it also hopes to give the state's student researchers a place to take their research ideas to market, said USD President Jim Abbott.
